Case study of Bharti Broadband Networks Ltd.
The ability to control a demanding network environment with reduced cost and increased manageability has provided Bharti's IT staff added flexibility. The total solution of Server Racks and enterprise KVM access provided the flexibility, modularity and performance needed to support a business-critical networking environment within Bharti Broadband.

The Company
Bharti Broadband is one of the largest Telecom Service providers. They are specialized in Mobility Voice & Data Services and also have a National Long Distance Fibre Optic Backbone across the country. They have created a common platform for developing integrated business communications solution for customers.

The Problem
Bharti Broadband, faced a problem caused by sudden growth. Their Internet Data Centre (IDC) was designed for 25 servers but soon contained 64. Some were in racks, some on tables and some were even on the floor. The cabling had, naturally, become haphazard and the site was chaotic. And now additional servers had to be added. Space was therefore a major issue, apart from managing security and administration.

The Solution
On analyzing the situation it was proposed that Bharti should adopt a modular approach for Server Room management. The initial plan was to house the existing 64 servers, with a provision for adding on additional servers. What was proposed to Ms Aruna Pidikiti - Director IT, and Mr Pankaj Gupta - Sr Manager - IT, was a 'Lights-out' environment with complete Console Control Manageability and administration of servers from outside the IDC. The master plan therefore included an Enterprise Level KVM switch which would give Bharti the flexibility to access their servers remotely.

The solution was to stack all 64 servers and one Enterprise KVM in 21 President cabinets wherein everything was condensed within 1/4th of the IDC space. A bonus to Bharti was that the cost of 62 monitors was eliminated, along with the power and UPS capacity needed. It took one night to reorganize the IDC by stacking the servers in the President racks, and connecting these with the Enterprise KVMs. This was achieved within the critical constraints sets, i.e. no server could be down for more than 1 hour.

Bharti's IDC is now controlled through only two supervisory monitors located outside the main server system. Previously there were 64 monitors located inside the IDC, which severely compromised the security of their mission-critical servers. The population of servers has since grown to 75, with space for more. Of course all the new servers are without monitors, keyboards and mouse devices. The modularity and scalability of such an Enterprise KVM solution allows additional servers to be added to the existing system without any further capital investment.

Thus for Bharti the benefits have been substantial.

The Benefits
For Bharti the benefits have been substantial. • They have saved the cost of 73 monitors to date, along with savings in power consumption and UPS capacity.
• In the existing set-up itself they have been able to accommodate four times as many servers as before. They have therefore saved capital investment in real estate and relocation costs.
• By restricting access to their Server Room, which is now a "Lights-out" facility, the level of security has increased markedly .
• By defining access rights in the Enterprise KVM the responsibility for server management has been clearly outlined.
• The owners of co-location servers can take complete control of their servers by logging on through the Enterprise KVM.

The ability to control a demanding network environment with reduced cost and increased manageability has provided Bharti's IT staff added flexibility. The total solution of Server Racks and enterprise KVM access provided the flexibility, modularity and performance needed to support a business-critical networking environment within Bharti Broadband.
